COMMUNITY CENTRE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS INDIVIDUALS
Reduced funding for special educational needs has taken a drastic decline. Government officials are struggling to devise a plan to help SEN (Special Educational Needs) individuals obtain the appropriate education. The reuse of historic buildings brings the past into the future. However, a lot of redundant historic buildings get demolished, meaning the community loses a part of their history and heritage.
This project focuses on how the essence of a historic building can be integrated into a re-purposed build, respecting the heritage of the building and place, whilst appeasing to contemporary social needs.
The space will focus on catering to the needs of SEN children and teens. Aiming to create a ‘safe space’ environment that honours the past while embraces the future. Prioritising sensory experience, holistic learning and interactive engagement.
The design will provide a space that celebrates diversity and promotes well-being for all. This design will seamlessly integrates the essence of a historic building into a re-purposed structure. Respecting its historical memory, complying with contemporary societal needs and portraying a vision for the future.
My Final Portfolio Project links with my dissertation on How does the integration of religious and spiritual elements in re-purposed churches unfold, through ritualisation and place, and what insights emerge regarding the recognition and utilisation of these aspects within the context of adaptive reuse? From this, I aimed to take the knowledge learnt and implement it into a new framework for my FPP. Using the knowledge of historical memory implementation of a church, and using it has a guideline for generalisation of historical buildings. Designing for community, place and space and how to create a better future through adaptive reuse.
